I had a strange encounter the other night while trying to find my way back to the cottage I’m staying in. It’s a moonless night and therefore pitch dark - I mean dark. I’m stumbling along this country lane when out of the bushes, something black and about the size of a labrador, gives a loud grunt and rushes by me. There’s only one thing it could have been; a wild pig or boar, known to the French as Sanglier. What do I do - head back in the direction of the main house or continue on, hoping the light will get better? I opt for the latter since going back in the other direction might bring me into contact with a herd of these beasts. Pretty scary - I tell you.
