    Cooking my own breakfast

One thing I miss when on tour is cooking. At home I'm a dab hand in the kitchen making everything from banana sandwiches to toast, porridge and occasionally a boiled egg.

Last night we stayed at a Best Western (how can there be more than one Best Western - surely all but one must just be Pretty Good Westerns) and in the morning I was delighted to find a 'make your own waffle' machine. Time to put my rusty culinary skills back to work.

    The instructions sounded easy enough:
    1. Poor mixture into waffle machine (it was ready mixed in a cup)
    2. Close lid
    3. Turn over and wait for buzzer

After hearing said buzzer I was expecting to open the kitchen contraption and be presented with a fully grown waffle. Disappointingly mine came in two halves, one stuck to each part of the device, and the 3 minute preparation time turned into about 10 as I hacked away at the result with a plastic knife.

Is that a reflection of my skill in the kitchen? Would Gordan Ramsey have fared any better? I doubt it. Maybe that's why he never makes waffles on the telly.
