    Happiness in Annapolis

Hello, hello…well, we are averaging approximately 6 – 7 hours drivetime each day. It threatened to snow in Buffalo but we merely got what is officially known as a ‘wintry mix’. That is to say; snow, sleet and rain all mixed together! So we count our blessings. The tour kicked off perfectly in the quaint colonial town of Annapolis, home of the elite U.S. Naval Academy, PRS guitars and this week, playing host to the U.N. Peace Conference chaired by Condoleza Rice.

The Ramshead Tavern is a legendary club, which regularly plays host to some of my favorite U.S. acts like Little Feat and Robert Cray etc. But one band, whose photo appears on the wall of fame tops ‘em all.. the illustrious Seldom Scene. They don’t come around too often but when they do….get yerself down there pronto!

One of the highlights of our visit was breakfast the next morning at Chuck and Ruths Delly (note the spelling). It was Sunday morning and this place has vibe and atmosphere in bucketfuls, with more wait staff than punters and lots of interesting conversation over huge plates of corn beef hash and eggs etc.

I must just mention that the drive down had us crossing the Delaware Memorial Bridge which bought back memories of the song In Crisis as featured on the new Wishbone Ash CD “The Power of Eternity.” Yes, we all took photos of the sign.

The great thing about touring the States (on this level) is that it is a time for reflection. Because of the very vastness and hugeness of the place, it makes you feel very small and insignificant, which of course is exactly what you are. I’m a masochist, so I like this feeling. The band are like “are you serious?” As a result, we play our asses off ‘cause it’s such a relief to leave the van and truck stops behind. Joe has sampled every kind of truck stop junk food. He told me yesterday that it’s official (sorry folks) “American chocolate is crap.” In -vehicle entertainment highlights are the complete series of Extras, comedians Bill Bailey and Patton Oswald. Comedy is a bigger hit on long journeys than music, actually.
